Phillies organizational coach Roly DeArmas explained to the club's new Dominican signees some important points, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

One of the important points involved a local all-you-can-eat restaurant. It was something signee Alberto Vicente explained they didn't have back in the Dominican Republic.

"Where we come from," said Vicente told The Inquirer through DeArmas, ''all we eat is rice and beans - and not much of that. That's why we're so skinny."

For Vicente, he would soon find himself back in the Dominican. His stay in the Phillies organization turned out as brief as possible. He isn't recorded as getting into a game.

Vicente was from Bani, D.R. He was 18 years old. He was 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighed 165 pounds. He also never got into a professional game.

Jackson reliever Pete Bauer developed a unique pitch in the minors, first in the Mets system and then continuing with the Astros, The Jackson Clarion Ledger wrote in July 1991. Fidel Compres played, accidentally caused woman's death

Fidel Compres went out after a game with the AAA Las Vegas Stars in July 1994. He then ended up inside his apartment, along with a teammate, two women and his two guns, The Associated Press reported of the police account. By the time the night was over, one of the two women was dead, shot in the neck, from a gun held by Compres, The AP wrote of the police account. "Compres began playing with two guns he keeps at his apartment, a .38-caliber revolver and a 9mm semi-automatic," The AP wrote . "While allegedly twirling the 9mm around on a finger, it discharged, sending a bullet into the neck of the woman, who died instantly, (the police spokesman) said." The shooting was ultimately determined not criminal, an accident. Compres played on elsewhere , but his time in affiliated ball had concluded. He last saw time in independent ball in 2000. Rob Mallicoat worked hard to make majors, then get back

Selected by the Astros that past January in 1984, Rob Mallicoat signed in May to  start his pro career . "This has been my goal all through baseball," Mallicoat told his hometown Hermiston Herald then. "It's going to be hard work, but I think it's going to be a good experience." For Mallicoat, it would be hard work, both on the field and off it. He made the majors . Then, after a series of injuries, he made it back. Mallicoat's career began that year, taken by the Astros in the first round of the January draft out of Taft College in California. Mallicoat started at short-season Auburn and single-A Asheville . He went 3-4, with a 4.02 ERA over 12 starts. He moved to single-A Osceola for 1985, then AA Columbus and AAA Tucson in 1986. After Brian Bennett 's first season in the minors in the Gulf Coast League, the scout that drafted him had good things to say to Bennett's hometown Palm Desert Post . The scout, Ross Sapp, told The Post that Bennett had improved his defense and his catching. He just had to work on his hitting. "He has a great desire for the game," Sapp told The Post . "He gives 120 percent all the time. That desire will carry him a long ways." For Bennett, he ultimately saw four pro seasons . He topped out at single A. Guillermo Sabino started off OK with his rookie Gulf Coast League Astros in 1990. In his first three at bats with the club, the infielder picked up one hit. He also stole a base, according to The Houston Post . By the time he was 10 games in, though, his average had slid to .179. Those 10 games proved to be the extent of his pro career . Sabino's career began and ended that year in 1990, signed by the Astros as a free agent. His college or home country is not included at either Baseball Reference or The Baseball Cube. By early August, Sabino had seen 13 at bats and three total hits , dropping his average to .231. He'd also stolen four more bases. By season's end, Sabino had recorded 28 at bats overall to 35 plate appearances. He notched five hits, one a triple, and stole those four bases. His average ended at .179, ending his career .
